Prof. Anwar R. Padhani is clinical lead in MRI and head of imaging research at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, London. Prof Padhani is an honorary senior lecturer at University College London. His radiology training was undertaken at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge and Guy's Hospital, London. Following a chest and cross-sectional imaging fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore he moved to the Institute of Cancer Research, Royal Marsden Hospital in 1994-2000.
He is involved in the development of innovative research programs investigating functional imaging and the microenvironment of tumours. He has performed numerous clinical research studies evaluating tumour perfusion, permeability, oxygenation and water diffusion in breast, brain, rectal and prostate cancers as well as studies of antiangiogenic treatments. This work which involves CT scanning, MRI and PET-CT is of international renown. He is a co-applicant in a number of successful grant proposals in support of this research. He is a key opinion leader on MRI perfusion and diffusion imaging as biomarkers of tumour response.
Prof. Padhani has a passion for teaching and has published chapters in 30 textbooks, 44 journal reviews and 20 educational posters. He has edited the book "Advances in Oncologic Imaging Techniques" (Taylor & Francis, New York) published in 2006. Scientifically he is very productive with over 88 full scientific articles and 165 research posters.
Prof Padhani has given over 120 invited lectures at national and international meetings including plenary talks on functional MRI, angiogenesis, and advanced prostate imaging. He organised the weekend educational course on "experimental methods in MR of cancer" at the annual meeting of ISMRM from 2006-2009 and helped co-organise the Imaging in Oncology course for ESMO 2009.
